Lobed brain
Lobophyllia sp.
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Description:
Lobophyllia sp. have two distinct sections of flesh, an outer ring of flesh and and an inner circle, often with contrasting colors or textures. The inner circle houses the coral's mouth or mouthes and tentacles hide between the two sections of flesh during the day and come out a night or in the presence of food. These corals have a skeletal base which the flesh may retract into when disturbed.
Lighting Requirements:
Lobophyllia can take a fairly wide range of lighting. While the coral should be usually placed on the sand to prevent the flesh from getting caught on the rock work when it extends and contracts throughout the day, it does usually need fairly direct light. Aquariums should have moderate to high lighting to achieve proper light penetration to the bottom of the tank.
Flow Requirements:
Medium to low flow should be provides to keep sediment from settling on the coral. Too much flow can cause the coral's flesh to retract or rip.
Growth:
Growth extends outward usually maintain it's somewhat circular shape often with strange shapes depending on coral size. Mouths may split and increase with growth as well as some minor skeletal growth.
Difficulty:
Easy
Rarity:
Common
